Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his entire cabinet resigned today over a child support scandal that unjustly accused thousands of families of fraud.
Rutte took responsibility after 26,000 innocent parents were financially ruined after they were mistakenly forced to repay tens of thousands of euros in a 2012 scandal.
Some have been targeted for minor paper errors such as mismatched signatures, while up to 11,000 dual nationals have been subjected to special screening – leading to allegations of systemic racism.
New elections will take place in March, with the center-right Rutte party acting as caretaker until then to steer the country’s coronavirus response. Holland is currently experiencing the strictest lockdown in the entire pandemic.
