Believing former club Chelsea to be “real rivals” to win the Premier League and Champions League this season, Joe Cole insisted that Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs could go far in European elite competition as well .
The Blues secured qualification for the knockout round of the Champions League by beating Rennes and are striving for their first success in the competition since 2012, in which a side boss Frank Lampard was involved.

The arrival of Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva means that Chelsea no longer have “glaring weaknesses”.
Prior to their trip to Seville, however, Cole insists that Stamford Bridge Club could well claim the doubles as Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva have eliminated the “glaring weaknesses” in their side.
‘I think, you [Chelsea] are real competitors, ”said Cole.
“I think all English teams cannot stop any of them from going all the way in the Champions League because of the quality and strength of our league.”
‘I don’t think there are any weaknesses at Chelsea at the moment. I feel like there aren’t any obvious weaknesses, there are areas that need improvement. But if you look at the last two months, certainly since Chilwell, Mendy and Silva got into the last four, the goals conceded have started.
Cole also credited Ben Chilwell for assisting in the defense of Stamford Bridge
Cole backed Lampard to win the club’s first league and Champions League doubles
The Blues haven’t won the Champions League since joining Lampard in 2012
“We look safe from set pieces. So those things have improved dramatically from last season. I think there are still areas where Chelsea can improve and they will improve.
‘But of course I have them as a contender to win the Champions League and the [Premier] League this year. But the other teams, your Man City, Liverpool and even United, also have a rich tradition in competition. I think English clubs will do well this year.
‘Bayern Munich I think the favorites are rightfully the champions, but I would put the money on the English sides to get deep into the competition and get at least one of them into the final. I think it’s a good year for us. ‘
Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown agreed with former English teammate Cole, stating that the four English teams are capable of conquering any team on the continent they can succeed.
The West London club have also had three full seasons without taking the Premier League title
Wes Brown also agreed that English clubs are in a good position to be dominant in Europe
“I feel like the English clubs have really good squads, they have spent money,” said Brown.
“Your Liverpoolers, your city, your Chelsea, your Man United, on their day they are more than capable of beating any team in Europe.
“I think it depends more on consistency, of course you have your Bayern Munich. But when you look at it as a whole, there is a great chance one of us can make that final and win it.
“I can’t name a team right now, other than Bayern Munich, that could say, ‘Yeah, they are probably the best team in Europe”, what they would say was Bayern Munich Use clubs. ‘
Cole and Brown added that only Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich favorites could create competition
