The first major tennis tournament of the year is in full swing and some of the fan favorites are still looking for the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup (men’s cup) and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (women’s cup). Players like Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka and Raphael Nadal want to take the championship home with them.
While all of these players have large advertising deals, the most common are with watch makers, and the only watch maker that has a permanent presence is Rolex. For most of the last half century, Rolex has had a constant presence in the sport, and the brand currently sponsors all four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as some of the world’s best professional players.
With Rolex sponsoring the tournament as well as a number of competing players, you can guarantee that a number of Rolex watches will be in attendance. But which models do the top tennis ambassadors from Rolex wear?
Bob’s Watches, the largest used Rolex retailer, has compiled a list of the most famous Rolex ambassadors of tennis and the Rolex who wear them.
Roger Federer – Rolex Datejust
Rolex entered into a partnership with Roger in 2006. This was one of the biggest single endorsements for any professional athlete at the time, a 10-year $ 15 million deal. A 10-year contract is still rare for sports stars even now, especially considering how a player’s career can fluctuate or even fall apart due to injuries.
That deal ended in 2016, but the Federer Rolex contract was extended in 2017. Roger now makes $ 8 million a year from Rolex and with no end date it looks like he’s now a lifelong ambassador.
Roger Federer’s favorite Rolex watch and the one most associated with it is the 41mm Rolex Datejust II reference. 116334 with a distinctive rhodium-plated dial with blue Arabic numerals.
Dominic Thiem – Rolex Daytona
Dominic Thiem is currently number 3 in the world and wears the Daytona chronograph made of stainless steel and ceramic on his wrist – a favorite among tennis players, it seems. Thiems Keramik Daytona has an elegant black dial instead of the white one. Thiem also wears a stainless steel Submariner, also with a black dial and black ceramic bezel.
Garbiñe Muguruza – Rolex Datejust
The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza is the former number 1 in the world and currently number 14. It took another 16 years before Muguruza finally began her meteoric rise in 2014. After that successful year, she bought her first Rolex to remember her first entry into the top 20 – and that sacrifice comes with a reward. She says of her Rolex Datejust 36: “When I look at this watch today, I see joy. I see myself working hard for what I wanted, I see myself as an independent woman. I see myself giving everything to make my dreams come true.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – Rolex Milgauss
France’s No. 1 tennis player was spotted wearing a Datejust II made of stainless steel and white gold and a Datejust made of stainless steel and yellow gold with a green dial. Another Rolex watch that seems to be one of Tsonga’s favorites is the Milgauss reference. 116400GV.
