Gig companies have long argued that people who drive for Uber or deliver groceries for DoorDash are not employees but self-employed – an important legal distinction that allows many Internet “platforms” to withhold benefits and take other steps to minimize their labor costs. Now the Californians are going to weigh that question by voting on an electoral measure called Proposition 22.
