The Weeknd performs with dancers in facial bandages at the Super Bowl 2021 halftime show
The pop star, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is the first Canadian to headline the event solo. He started his show on Sunday with his tune “Starboy”. Shortly thereafter, viewers got a glimpse into The Weeknd with a group of dancers whose faces were wrapped in bandages – an aesthetic the artist recently explored and which he sees as a statement of celebrity.
The concert culminated when The Weeknd and a large group of bandaged dancers took over the field for a performance of “Blinding Lights” with accompanying choreography.
In the early evening, country star Eric Church and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan played the national anthem. R&B artist HER was also there to sing “America the Beautiful” while poet Amanda Gorman recited a poem before the game started.
The Super Bowl will be broadcast on CBS and broadcast live on the CBS All Access app.
Meanwhile, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton poked fun at their marriage in a hilarious advertisement – check it out below:
