A video of The weakest link Host Anne Robinson questions a candidate about receiving benefits and her personal life has gone viral.
Robinson hosted the popular BBC quiz show from 2000 to 2012.
The reappeared clip was widely criticized by viewers and called out Robinson’s “unshakably cruel jokes”.
In the clip, which has been viewed almost 2 million times since then, the presenter interviews a candidate on the program named Ann.
After Ann announces that she is an adult single mother of three sons, Robinson asks her, “So how many Asbos [anti-social behaviour orders]? “before adding,” How many of your three boys have markings on their ankles? “
“Well, none so far,” replies Anne, to which Robinson replies with a second question: “You do benefits, don’t you?”
“I knew I was waiting for it,” says the candidate. “I really do a 24/7 job.” The hostess continues her questioning and asks: “Do you have advantages?” to which Anne replies that she is.
At another moment in the clip, Robinson asks, “What happened to the husband? You didn’t become gay, did you? “
Social media viewers have been outraged by Robinson’s questions. “How did the editing work? What a disgusting question, ”wrote one user.
Another added: “I honestly can’t believe this was allowed to happen. It’s utterly disgusting.”
“Bad taste doesn’t start to cover it up,” wrote a third person. “It’s vengeful and reinforces stereotypes. To me, it contains hate speech. Disgusting.”
Others, however, have defended the presenter, stating that Robinson’s “cruel” persona was a known aspect of the show and that the attendees knew what to expect before entering the show.
A person who claimed to have been in the live audience for an episode of The weakest link, wrote: “To be fair, Anne Robinson was absolutely kind to attendees when they weren’t filming and apologized for having a tough time.
“It all seemed part of the ‘bad’ act and the participants seemed to know that.”
Another person said, “It was set up that way. From outfits she wore, etc. It was really pantomime. I have to insert this context. “
“I guess this was a script,” replied one user. “The lady may have known what questions to ask. However, it expresses a very disturbing narrative that has been insidiously brought to us. “
The clip’s popularity follows shortly after it was announced that Robinson would replace Nick Hewer as the new host of countdown.
