Callum Smith suffered a bicep injury in the “second or third round” of Canelo Alvarez’s defeat, Eddie Hearn reveals with the Liverpool fighter “devastated” after the defeat
Callum Smith admitted he was “devastated” after losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on Saturday night in which he suffered a gruesome bicep injury.
Alvarez secured a resounding super middleweight win in San Antonio, Texas to win Smith’s previously undefeated WBA title as well as the vacant WBC belt.
Combat promoter Eddie Hearn said he thought Smith had loosened his biceps in the second or third round, and the pictures showed the misshapen muscle that subsequently caused distress to the beaten man.

The Mexican won a unanimous points victory in a one-sided competition in San Antonio, Texas
He did not comment on the injury afterwards, but said to DAZN: “I am devastated. I came here to win. No excuses, he was very good.
“Maybe I’ve been gaining weight for too long. I don’t feel that dominant late in fights.
“It could have been a better version of me tonight. He stepped out and was the better man.
‘He’s smart, to be honest. He is smart. He closes the bottom, sets traps and before you know it he closes the bottom. I may let it close the bottom too easily. ‘
When asked if he would consider gaining weight, Smith replied, “I have to spend time with my family and decide what is next year for me.”

Matchroom promoter Hearn said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “You have just seen the pound-for-pound king. Callum Smith is so tough. He has a great interview there.
“I think he loosened his biceps in the second or third lap, but that didn’t really matter.
‘It was a master class from Canelo. I’ve just left Smith’s locker room and everyone’s talking about Alvarez. He’s just so good.
“I am proud of Callum. He never stopped throwing but he has come across the best fighter in the world. ‘
Hearn said he believes Alvarez will face British WBO champions Billy Joe Saunders next year before a third fight against Gennady Golovkin.
