- The US is now the hardest hit country in the world, with more than a quarter of all cases worldwide and over 423,000 deaths
- The UK is just behind with 3.7 million cases and more than 100,000 deaths
- Health officials around the world promised vaccines would halt the pandemic
- However, the rollout is slow: 68.1 million doses are being administered worldwide, and new, more contagious variants threaten to reduce the effectiveness of shots
