To date, the character – a 50-year-old infant of Yoda’s species – has been referred to as The Child in official promotional and marketing materials.
However, in the latest episode of the Star Wars spin-off, titled “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” it became clear that the character’s real name is actually Grogu.
The revelation came after Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu met with the Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who communicated with the child using violence.
Not only did Ahsoka reveal his name, but he also implied that Grogu also has a tragic backstory taught in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.
He was somehow saved from slaughter when the temple was attacked during the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
The fans reacted to the name revelation with mixed feelings. Some have touted the choice as the “perfect” name for the character, while others have insisted that they will continue to refer to him as Baby Yoda.
“I’m sorry, but Grogu is just awful,” wrote one Twitter user. “I think I wanted his name to be Mitch or something that wasn’t a grogu.”
Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian finally gives Baby Yoda a name, but I’m sticking with Baby Yoda, ”wrote another. “Grogu? “Really?” Sounds like a Star Wars soup. “
