As a precocious 17-year-old at the Everton youth club, Rooney quickly became one of the best club and country players of his generation.
With a high level of expectation, he shone at Euro 2004 – his first international tournament – for England and signed a transfer worth 25 million pounds with Manchester United at the age of 18.
Rooney became United’s all-time scorer, with 253 goals in 559 games in 13 largely successful seasons in which he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.
He scored 53 goals in 120 games for England but was sadly unable to match the Three Lions’ long-awaited success in a tournament.
Rooney only joined Derby a year ago – he had an 18-month contract as player-coach for MLS team DC United.

And after unbeaten in seven of their nine games during that time, the Derby board decided to appoint Rooney – an end to his illustrious career as a player.
Rooney said on Friday shortly after his permanent appointment was confirmed, “My whole life has been playing football so I’m happy to be part of it still. It’s a new chapter for me. Will i miss playing? Sure.
“But time doesn’t stop. I’ve had my time, it’s time for the younger generation to have their time and for me to lead them.
‘My future lies in management. I had a great career with a few ups and downs, but I wasn’t going to change anything.

‘I’ve been very lucky to play for some great teams. Come through the academy in Everton and play in the first team. A dream came true.
13 years at Manchester United was the highlight of my career for the trophies I won. I was very grateful for the opportunity and loved every minute.
“Going to the US and coming to Derby County should help the teams to be successful, but it should also give me more experience in different leagues.
“But now I want to make some history in my managerial career.
“I have been preparing and working for this for several years. It is what I wanna do
“I’ve tried it for the past few months and enjoyed it. I’m ready to bring Derby County back into the league. ‘
He added: ‘This football club is huge. This club will always try to grow and achieve great things. For me, it’s a great opportunity to help the club get back to its glory days. ‘

Despite other offers, I instinctively knew Derby County was the place for me.
‘It is a great honor to have the opportunity to follow Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Phillip Cocu and I can promise everyone at the club and all of our fans, my staff and me that I will leave no stone unturned Potential that I have seen in the past 12 months of this historic football club. ‘

Rooney will take on his first game as a permanent coach at home on Saturday against championship rivals Rotherham United.
But he will have to quit his job with Derby, who is currently in the relegation zone in England’s second division.
And when Stephen Pearce talked about the new era of the Rams under Rooney, he couldn’t contain his excitement.
‘Our recent earnings spike under Wayne came with a number of positive performances, notably our 2-0 home win over Swansea City and a 4-0 win at Birmingham City.
‘During that nine-game run we also dramatically improved their defensive record, conceding five goals, while also becoming more effective and ruthless in the attacking third.
“These foundations have given the club a platform on which it can build in the second half of the season under Wayne’s guidance.”
